Computers.

No, they are not the enemy despite what you may think. In fact, once you overcome your fear, you will discover what the rest of the world already knows; it’s hard to live without a computer and internet access.

However, perhaps you grew up before computers became mainstream and never had the opportunity to familiarize yourself with them. Well, if this is you, relax, there is a multitude of others out there just like you. However, regardless of age or familiarity, it is time to make a decision to become computer literate.

You may be asking why anyone really needs a computer. The answer can be found be simply taking a look around at your surroundings. Over half of online purchases are now made on the internet and growing each day. In addition, computers have allowed us to communicate with anyone in the world quickly and easily for absolutely free. Bills can be paid totally online, books can be purchased and read, movies watched and the list goes on and on.

Regardless of age or any other factor, there are two things that every computer owner should be adept at.

First, it is vital to be adept at using word editors. These programs such as Microsoft Word allow you to type letters, emails, papers etc., save them to the computer and then send them to others via email or other options. These editors even fix your grammar and spelling mistakes!

Secondly, it cannot be stated more emphatically; learn how to use the internet!

The internet is truly the most amazing innovation in our society’s history. It allows one computer to “talk” to another anywhere in the world at any time. It has also made libraries somewhat obsolete. Research any topic you desire, shop online, play games with individuals from other countries, build your own website and make money, and on and on. Words cannot describe the possibilities.

Imagine something as simple as using email to communicate with loved ones and even a free program like Skype that allows you to video chat? How about no more paper receipts or records to keep up with? Envision a more simplified and enjoyable life; that is the result of becoming proficient on a computer.

If you are a senior and are uncomfortable with the thought of computer training, don’t be. There are a multitude of free classes on computer training in most neighborhoods and also online. Computers and the internet will open up an entire new world and must be taken advantage of.
